Battlefield trip 2005
Osterhaus with the 12th MO regiment
5. This is a rare photo taken in winter camp 1864 showing then- Brig. Gen. PJO and the regiment he originally recruited in St. Louis and Belleville IL in late 1861. Although he didn't lead them personally for more than a few days because of his rapid promotion, they served in his division for Pea Ridge, Chattanooga and the Atlanta campaign. He always kept a warm place for them; these officers were the ones who presented him with a ceremonial sword when he got promoted. (The one in the Missouri Historical Society)
PJO is marked number 1. He is about 9th from the right, close to the center, standing with his arms behind him. He's wearing long boots, a hip-length jacket, buttoned, and an army kepi (enlisted men's cap)
