3. Most of the battle was fought around here, with the rebels repeatedly charging up the hill and the Federals charging down. After several hours nothing had changed. PJO was in the thick of the fight throughout the day. Around 10 am General Lyon, the Union leader, was killed near here and about an hour later the Federals began a withdrawal to Springfield, about 10 miles north. The Confederates did not pursue.
